Abstract

INTRODUCTION: Natural disasters impact people’s lives and communities. There are several actions to promote collective memory following a disaster; the memorial is one of them. Like Chile, Japan has a high exposure to natural hazards, which has led to an intense exchange of experiences. OBJECTIVE: To explore the characteristics and functions of Japan's natural disaster memorials. METHODS: A total of 13 memorials, corresponding to the three major disasters of the last 100 years in Japan were analyzed: Kanto (1923), Hanshin-Awaji (1995) and Tohoku (2011). They were analyzed considering their materiality, location, financing and relationship with the community. RESULTS: Results suggest four functions for these memory places: to inform, to educate, spirituality and recreation. These functions are closely linked to the relationship they establish with the community and how it interacts with them in everyday life. DISCUSSION: The memorials of natural disasters in Japan rise and organize around the community, being closely related to the site of the disaster and the practices surround them. We display a contrast with the Chilean memorials, providing a view from the ‘animita’ and its aesthetics, as a tradition in national collective memory.
