Abstract

BACKGROUND: Many young adults experience high levels of stress and are exposed to risky behaviors such as drug and alcohol use, and unprotected sex. OBJECTIVE: To understand the relationship between stress, intimate partner violence, and dyadic satisfaction in a sample of low-income young adults. METHOD: We conducted a descriptive-correlational study through the internet, using a survey design. A total of 236 people participated, the majority being women (81.4%) between the ages of 18-30. RESULTS: We found a negative, although not significant, relationship between stress and dyadic satisfaction (rτ = -. 06, p> .05), a positive and significant relationship between stress and partner violence (rτ = .19, p <.001), and a negative and significant relationship between intimate partner violence and dyadic satisfaction (rτ = -.21, p <.001). The mediation analysis showed a significant indirect effect of stress on dyadic satisfaction, through partner violence (b = -0.15, BCa CI [-0.26, -0.07]). CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that this population has high levels of stress and is more prone to engage in violent behaviors with their partners, which has an impact on the decrease in their dyadic satisfaction.
