Abstract

The notion of apologetics crosses Paul Tillich’s theological work throughout. First considered under the angle of “atack”, the notion evolves to be understood as a response to the questions and interpellations directed to theology. In this paper, we will follow the historical evolution of apologetics, from Tillich’s teenage writings (1913) and his frst German lessons (1919-1933) to his great American work on systematic theology (1951). During this journey, we will also underline how the Tillichian position always looked for seting apart from the Barthian position. Finally, we will fnish with some current considerations about the notion of apologetics.
