Pope Benedict XVI focuses his Social Encyclical on two topics: love and truth. There are four keys to understanding this from the standpoint of theology. The frst comes from the sense of the Encyclical itself: charity needs truth, and truth needs charity. This is basic. The second points to the Biblical source of the Encyclical: Paul, in his letter to the Ephesians, speaks of creating community in a responsible way. That community, today, is a global one. The third key presents Christian and human life with all its concerns as a vocation. And the fourth complements the former when it speaks of a gift freely given. These four keys allow one to get a deeper understanding of the Encyclical and of the ideas of Benedict XVI.
